Magnets in a protective steel pot have several advantages over conventional magnets:

They withstand impacts well. The steel pot protects the brittle neodymium magnet inside, so the magnet won’t break in collisions.

They have greater holding power. The pot contributes to the overall magnetism.

They can be easily attached in various places, as the pot can include a thread or screw hole. That’s why they are also called magnetic mounts.

Advantages of the pot magnets: They are more shock resistant, easy to mount in different places and give you more holding power for the same price.

Disadvantages of the pot magnets: They have a weaker long range. Their ability to attract more distant objects decreases rapidly with distance. The pot magnets also only have a one-way attraction. The magnetic field on the steel side is very weak.

Which type of magnet is better? If the magnet is subject to shock or you need to hold it lightly, a magnet with a pot is better. If there is a gap between the magnet and the attracted object, or if you need the magnet to attract objects from all sides, a regular magnet without a pot is better.
